The Regio 2N, technically referred to as the Z 55500 series at SNCF (and also known as the Porteur Hyperdense project), is a family of two-level electric multiple units built by the manufacturer Bombardier Transport (now Alstom) at the site of Crespin. Put into service in 2014, this equipment was designed to meet the constant growth in traffic on regional and suburban routes.
This train is distinguished by its innovative articulated architecture that uniquely alternates single-level access boxes (where doors, platforms and PRM/bike areas are located) with double-level travel boxes, maximising the available seating space. The Z 55500 version is a dual-current equipment (capable of running under 1,500 V DC and 25,000 V AC) limited to a maximum speed of 160 km/h. Flexible, this series has been ordered by many French regions in configurations of different lengths—ranging from short to long trains—in order to best adapt to the needs of TER and suburban networks.
